A girl’s best friend

They are all I need to please me, they can stimulate to tease me, they won’t leave in the night, I have no fear that they might desert me – is the famous line from a song and we all know what ‘they’ refers to. Yes, they are diamonds, small pieces of nature’s brilliance and women’s best friend. We know she loves you above everything else but a diamond ring may consolidate that love a bit deeper. Hey, I am just being practical. But, where can you get the precious stone? Well, in the past people refrained from buying diamonds from Bangladesh as there was no way of determining the authenticity of the stone, but now you have Diamond World and here, for the right amount, the sparkling piece of carbon can be yours – no need to have any misgivings.

Okay, enter Diamond World and you are catapulted to a realm of glitter and luxury because even before one looks at the items on offer, it’s the décor of the shop that will strike you. Furniture with a semi Baroque style coloured in deep oak creates a sophisticated ambiance and instantly, one gets the feeling that here, talking about money may be trifle vulgar. You just go in and buy the stuff. In fact, the shop seems to culture the aristocratic philosophy of genteel understatement. If you are rich and educated you don’t boast, you stay calm and that kind of composure befits the environment of Diamond World.

‘Most of our items are made of gold and diamond and are manufactured here; however, the stones are imported,’ said Paban Kumar and added that even stones from De Beers were available. Answering to a question about the price which many thought to be higher compared to the prices in Kolkata or Delhi, he said that this was because of high duty. ‘If the government reduces tax then we may be able to keep lower prices,’ observed Kumar but also made it clear that Diamond World aimed to cater to all kinds of clientele. ‘We have nose pins worth Tk2000 and the price of necklaces can go to great heights. But to us every buyer, irrespective of the money he/she spends, is equal.’

With Puja and Eid not too far away it’s safe to assume that quite a few people will be stopping here to get their hands on some precious stones. But, will the middle class ever venture here? ‘The shop may, claim to cater to clients of all classes but in my opinion people from the middle classes might not come here because they might feel intimidated by high price tags. However, if there is publicity that Diamond World is not just for the elite then it won’t be a shop only for a handful,’ commented Rasheda Khanam, a housewife. But, only time can tell what will happen and until then, let’s hope Diamond World will bring a lot of lustre to the lives of many women; that is, lustre that will last.
