Arrest warrant issued against 20 Kaptanbazar meat traders

A special mobile court, led by magistrate Rokon-ud-Doulah, on Friday raided Kaptanbazar in Dhaka and issued warrant of arrest against 20 meat traders on charge of selling buffalo meat as beef. The magistrate said, ‘We raided the abattoir at Kaptanbazar early morning and found 100 buffaloes and only 12 cows. The buffaloes were butchered to be sold as beef.’ He said the court had issued warrant of arrest against 20 traders, involved in the practice. Rokon said a large number of buffaloes were sold at Gabtali every day; the buffalo meat is sold as beef in city markets. Thirty mobile courts in the past four days realised Tk 42,13,700 as fine and filed 1,069 cases for violation of traffic rules, BSTI ordinance, food act, DMP act and environmental act in 28 police areas in Dhaka. The courts also jailed 61 persons for varying terms. Twenty-seven mobile courts on Monday realised Tk 10,26,550 as fine and filed 260 cases. The courts also jailed one person for two days. Twenty-seven mobile courts on Tuesday realised Tk 11,94,700 as fine and filed 265 cases. Three were jailed for varying terms. Thirty-two courts on Wednesday realised Tk 9,16,500 as fine and filed 269 cases. The courts also jailed 29 persons. A court, led by magistrate Ruhul Amin on Monday, raided the Crazy Chinese Restaurant at Shyampur and jailed its owners to six months’ imprisonment on charge of selling stale and rotten food. The court also jailed the owner of Shefali Food and Biscuit Factory for three months. The court realised Tk 50,000 as fine from Eagle Bakery for having no trade licence and BSTI approval. The court realised Tk 30,000 as fine from the China Bridge Chinese restaurant at Postagola. A court, led by magistrate Khalilur Rahman Kaguji, raided Mahanagar Medical Service Clinic and Pathology and realised Tk 20,000 as fine from one for prescribing without medical certificate. A court, led by magistrate Tapan Kumar Biswas on Tuesday, raided Rajuk canteen and realised Tk 30,000 as fine. The court realised Tk 25,000 as fine from the Bangladesh Bank canteen at Motijheel for keeping environment unhygienic and using harmful oil and soda in food items. A court on Wednesday, led by magistrate Rokibul Hassan, raided Malancha Hotel and First Food Shop, arrested its manager Sohag, Harun and Monir and jailed them. The court realised Tk 60,000 as fine from the Malancha owner. Another court, led by Tapan Kumar Biswas, realised Tk 8,000 as fine from the owner of the Gharoya Restaurant. This was the third time the restaurant was fined by mobile courts. A court on Thursday raided the Hotel New Star near the Ramna crossing, arrested 23 people, including 13 women and jailed them for 15 days for being involved in unsocial activities. Another court arrested five persons from a hotel, Sebika International at Ramna and jailed them for 15 days for the same reason. The courts began functioning on October 4 in view of Durga Puja and Ramadan to check fitness of vehicles, vehicle papers, and ensure enforcement of traffic laws. The courts in the past fortnight realised Tk 1,74,30,925 as fine and jailed 153 people for varying terms.
Student bodies at Rajshahi Univ threaten strike
Admission form price reduction demanded

The Rajshahi University student organisations threatened with a strike for an indefinite period from November 15 if admission form price and the minimum required GPA for admission are not reduced by November 14. The Chhatra Front leaders and activists on Thursday submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor, Altaf Hossain, in this regard. Jamaat-e-Islami student front Islami Chhatra Shibir also demanded that the university should reduce the price of admission form, revoke unit-based admission test, reduce the minimum required GPA and introduce 80-mark test. The student organisations went out on demonstrations and staged sit-in agitation programme on the campus. Shibir also threatened with a strike from November 15 if the demands are not met by November 14. The admission subcommittee had an urgent meeting at the vice-chancellor’s house Thursday night to discuss and review the demands. The administration did not disclose any details. The public relations department said the next meeting on the issue would be held on October 29 which might make a decision.
Body in Barisal to look into Eid passenger safety

A seven-member committee of representatives of inland water transport agency, sea transport director, district and police administration and of river transport owners and workers was formed in Barisal to look into security of passengers during Eid rush. Sources said Barisal port BIWTA officer Saiful Islam had been made convener and Class I magistrate Md Mokhlesur Rahman, subinspector Borhan Reza, sea transport directorate inspector Bellal Hossain, launch owners’ association representative Sultan Ahmed, river transport workers’ representative Eakin Ali Master, and launch station workers’ representative Khwaja Md Iqbal members. The convener said the committee would begin functioning on November 1. ‘We will try to stop overloading and check fitness and survey certificates, and security systems.’

ASI, constables sued in extortion case
Mohammad Tomiz Uddin, secretary of the Sattala Slum Development Committee at Mohakhili, filed a charge with the chief metropolitan magistrates court against assistant subinspector Golam Rahman, his source Abul Hossain Mollah Kalu and five to six constables. The complaint alleged that the accused went to his shanty and snatched Tk 8,000 by assaulting him as he failed to collect Tk 50,000 as tolls at midnight on October 23. After hearing, magistrate Mohammad Mirznur Rahman directed the additional inspector general of police of the Criminal Investigation Department for taking legal action against the accused.

test results
Ninety-six candidates have been selected through written tests of the Bangladesh Navy Officer Cadet 2006-A for facing the Inter Service Selection Board. Results of the tests held on July 22, 2005 were published Thursday. The board will issue call-up letters to the selected candidates for the tests and interviews scheduled to be held in November. It has asked the candidates to contact the board if the call-up letters do not reach any candidates by November. The candidates are asked to report to the senior medical officer of BNS Haji Mohsin, Dhaka Cantonment for the final medical check-up, said an ISPR release. Two electrocuted
in Chittagong
One Monowara Begum, 38, and her daughter Munni were electrocuted at Bakalia in Chittagong when a live wire fell into a pond Thursday evening. Local residents said they were electrocuted at around 4:30pm when they went to take bath in the pond near Gawsia Manjil at Ishaquarpul of Bakalia. Monowara died on the spot. Munni died on her way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Free cycle riding training
A free bicycle riding training programme was launched on Thursday in the capital city. Manusher Janyta Rasta, an alliance of NGOs working for sustainable transport system, organised the training programme. The organisers said they would train persons free on every Saturday and Thursday on Road 4/A in the Dhanmondi Residential Area.
