Atish Dipangkar Saparja in Chittagong
CULTURAL CORRESPONDENT

To celebrate the Buddha Purnima, the prime festival of the Buddhist community, Natyadhara, a Dhaka based theatre group will stage one of their well acclaimed plays Atish Dipangkar Saparja at the Theatre Institute Auditorium in Chittagong at 7:00pm on May 21.
The play, written and directed by Alok Basu, denounces war, religious intolerance, violence and other social evils. According to history, Atish Dipangkar, a Buddhist monk and a preacher, was the first Indian who went outside the subcontinent to preach his beliefs.
Covering the lifetime of the philosopher, from his birth to his journey to Tibet, the playwright has bridged skilfully the past with the present situations of the country and the world as a whole.
The play presents the richness of Bengal, particularly, eastern Bengal, (present Bangladesh), in the field of education, culture and focuses on the knowledge of the people of this region. Interestingly, a contrast of teaching and learning between the time of Dipangkar and the present day is showcased.
The destructive and damaging influence of politics among students and teachers in the universities of today are portrayed with subtlety but nevertheless the message will reach the audience and stir their conscience.
In addition, the need for peace in the present day world is also focussed. In a symbolic approach, the role of Dipangkar, who wanted to prevent the war between Kanaj and Maghad kingdoms during his time is compared to that of the present day United Nations and Kofi Annan in relation to the war in Iraq and Palestine.
The cast includes Litu Sakhawat, Sumana Siddiqi, Bishwajit Sarkar, Shamim Reza, Sabrin Choudhury, Alok Saha Babu, Ashrafun Nahar Dina and Rafiqul Islam. Kamaluddin Kabir has designed the set while Sudip Chakrabarti and Ruhul Amin are responsible for the lighting.
Litu Sakhawat has directed the music and has choreographed along with Sharmili Bandapaddhaya.
