COLOURS OF SHAKO
Her side of the story

TOWHEED FEROZE

Shako is an organisation of women artists. The motive of this body is to provide a platform for women artists to unite, share their impulses and form a union that transcends aesthetic values. In fact, Shako is an association that integrates both artistic senses with a social stand and attempts to show independent women of today, doing what they want to do. And in that stance the body asks other women to break the chains of social restrictions and come out.
The exhibition titled ‘Colours of Shako’ is going on at the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts and featuring the works of 13 artists. The show presents women and society in diverse situations. Honestly speaking, the power of the collection lies in the variety which touches sensitive issues like the suppression of women and topics such as the need for solitude, personal space and so on.
‘I think it’s the matter of personal space that comes on and on in many of the works as a recurring theme,’ comments Imtiaz Alam Beg, a photographer adds, ‘you see from a viewers perspective. I feel that the notion of an independent space is non-existent among women and even if a woman wants some time of her own to wander in her domain, it is seen as discourteous to the point of being blatantly rude.’
‘The initial reaction is that of ecstasy aroused from the use of diverse colours and even if we do not let the inner meanings and the sub–texts reach out to us, the variety in subjects is enough to hold our attention,’ says Sultana, an aspiring artist.
Talking about the use of colours with deep shades she says that it helps the works reach out to the viewers instantly.
To mention some of the works that carry both a poignant meaning as well as the power to captivate we must mention, ‘Waiting’, ‘Isolation’ and ‘Spiritual Beauty’ by Selima Sharmin, Fareha Zeba and Rebeka Sulatna Moly respectively. The issue of the suppression of the voice of women is found in quite a few works pointing to the fact that this problem still affects society. The works together send out a call for the world to recognise women as a section which has its own desires, aspirations and needs. If anyone goes out of this exhibition missing this point then he/she will miss the core value that has made Shako a reality.
