TÊTE-À-TÊTE
Shayan Chowdhury Arnob
Basking in the success of his new album ‘Chaine Bhabish’, Shayan Chowdhury Arnob takes some time out to talk to Hussain Amir Ali of New Age about the past, the present and the future
HAA: When did you record your first ever song? Arnob: I was 17 years old then, and my wife (then girlfriend), Sahana, gave me the lyrics of the song. Inspired by the lyrics I composed the song ‘Ekta chele’ and recorded it at a studio in Stantiniketan. I still have it in my PC. HAA: Your first song to take the musical industry by storm was ‘Shey je boshey ache’. Enlighten us about its beginning. Arnob: When Black had started the filming for ‘Off beat’, I was approached by the director to sing a song for them. That is how ‘Shey je boshey ache’ was conceived. I recorded the song and went back to Shantiniketan. When I returned, I was quite happy to know that the song was a big hit. HAA: What about your debut album Chaine Bhabish? Arnob: Composing music and recording songs at my home was a passion for me. I had recorded round about 40 songs when this friend told me to record an album. I thought ‘why not?’ And that is how Chaine Bhabish came to life. HAA: Which is your favourite song from the album? Arnob: I listen to all kinds of songs depending on my mood. Therefore, I don’t have any favourite song or favourite singer or a favourite genre of music. The same applies to my album as well. A few days back I was listening to Hariye giyechi and Ek din. Nowadays I am listening to Chilte rode and Amar hariye jawa. HAA: What inspires you to compose good music? Arnob: Basically my friends write the lyrics and that is what inspires me to compose my music. Also, classical songs of Rashid Khan, vocal renditions of Pratul Mukherjee and the music of U2 and Radiohead also play quite a role in the outcome of my music. HAA: What role has Shantiniketan played in your life? Arnob: What I am today and all my activities have been gifted to me by the 17 years I spent at Shantiketan. For one, I can say that I have developed a respect for traditions and culture of this land. I have become more creative and I appreciate creativity at a different level as well. The educational system over there has affected my whole thinking process and my lifestyle. I have become a lot more figurative person. In addition, I learned a lot about guitars and keyboards from my friends in Dhaka, the lessons on Rabindra Sangeet, folk and classical songs create a huge impact on my music. HAA: What are you doing nowadays? Arnob: I should be focusing on my arts as I have done my Masters in Fine Arts. But I am doing very little of arts and have indulged my self in other things, which does draw quite some criticism from my father. I am directing videos of Habib’s new album and directing videos of my own album as well. And during my free time I am back to composing my songs as usual or involving myself in a game of football. HAA: How would you assess the present day music industry in Bangladesh? Arnob: It has changed drastically in the past couple of years. Alternative underground bands have been doing a fantastic job along with the remixes of folk and other genre of songs. Good music is being composed in all kinds of genre. There is still the stereotyped music that we come across but that to is going through innovative changes according to the different styles of the artistes. HAA: What are your future plans? Arnob: I plan to form a band with Bangla and create a new brand of music. My work on the new album has already started and I plan to release it by the year end. Also, I am planning to hold my own painting exhibition at the end of the year. And in the long run, apart from all my other activities, I want to join in film making and become a successful film maker.
