Jalbalika staged at National Theatre Hall
MARK S BAIDYA

Bangladesh is a land of rivers and her people have benefited from the fertility that it brings. However, Bangladesh is also a land of floods; throughout the ages floods have brought numerous sufferings to the people of this country.
The play, ‘Jalbalika’ revolves around this fact. On July 27, the play was performed at the National Theatre Hall in Shilpakala Academy.
The members of the cast were from Padatik group and this was the 26th production of the play.
The event was held on the occasion of the silver jubilee celebration of the play.
Dance group Nrityanandan, Nrityam and Jago Art Centre of Bangladesh performed to mark the occasion.
The proceeds of the silver jubilee festival will be donated for the treatment of veteran freedom fighter & actor Mujibur Rahman Dilu, who is grievously ill and is at BIRDM hospital.
The story features life, love and death on the river bank. It captures the scene where the river is a life giver and a destroyer. Joybaul, a respected baul in the village is known for his ability to inspire boatmen during races and lead them to victory. While composing a new tune for the upcoming boat race, Joybaul discovers his daughter’s ability to sing.
He then proposes to the mohajan (village headman)to let her sing in his place. Initially, the mohajan refused and at this moment a strong point was raised by Joybaul, ‘why’, he asked, ‘because she is a girl’? Sure enough, she leads the boatmen to victory and gains favour in the eyes of the people.
But good times have to end. The clouds darkened and the winds howled, yes, the great flood was indeed upon them. Joybaul’s wife in a dream saw her daughter being swiped away by death (symbolised by a giant snake).
A plea was made to the mohajan that he lends them their boat so that the children could be taken to safer grounds. But he refused to do so. Having no choice, Joybaul had to make the best of a ‘dinghi’. As he rowed on with his two children, a storm arose and the waves crashed on the small ‘dinghi’ causing it to sink.
The climax of the play was when Joybaul had to choose between his son and his daughter, because he could only carry one as he swam to the bank.
The acting of the group was excellent and was aided by sound effects, which was very creative indeed.
Overall, the play and all aspects of it were executed with undeniable quality. A must see for viewers.
