Shahin’s double effort

Shahin Hossain of Barisal made history by scoring centuries in both the innings of a match in the Ispahani Mirzapore Tea 6th National Cricket League as his team drew the match against Chittagong on Sunday. Former national opener Mehrab Hossain of Dhaka also cracked a century but his team fell short by 27 runs of victory against Khulna as the match ended in a stalemate. The match between Rajshahi and Sylhet was also undecided as Sylhet finished the fourth and final day on 254 for six. Chittagong had taken a 241-run lead on the first innings and Barisal with the intention of saving the match started the day with 85 for one. Shahin Hossain, who clubbed 119 in the first innings, again arrived as a wall by digging himself at the wicket and slamming 110 not out. He faced 241 balls and hit 15 boundaries during his 241-minute tenancy in the middle. Imran Ahmed contributed 37 while Nahidul Huq Shawon scored 46. Nadif Chowdhury’s 31 at the number nine position finally dashed the Chittagong hopes of routing their opponents. But, as the first innings leaders, Chittagong earned four points against Barisal’s two. Dhaka were chasing a target of 262 against Khulna at the Fatullah stadium and came close to making it. Former national opener Mehrab Hossain found his form playing a century knock but still failed to take his team to the winning post. Mehrab scored 107 off 230 balls hitting nine boundaries. Sazzad Kadir (31), Khaled Mahmud (24) and Arafat Sunny (25 not out) were the other notable scorers. Dhaka earned four points as the first innings leader. National pacer Mashrafee bin Mortaza grabbed three wickets for 44 runs. At the Rajshahi Stadium, the hosts resumed on 217 for five and declared their innings on 257 for six setting a target of 302 runs to Sylhet. Jahurul Islam scored 78, Naeem Islam made 50 and Nuruzzaman remained not out with 26. Sylhet were boosted by their openers as Nuruzzaman and Hasibul Huq scored 74 and 54 runs respectively. National pacer Tapash Baisya, batting at number five, scored 40 while Sadiqur Rahman and skipper Parvez Ahmed both remained not out on 34 to finish the day at 254 for six. As Rajshahi scored 299 against Sylhet’s 253 in their first innings, the hosts pocketed four points and the other two went to Sylhet.
‘HC verdict should be honoured’
STAFF CORRESPONDENT
The elected directors of the Bangladesh Cricket Board urged its president to convene a meeting of the board as early as possible and let them start their work at the country’s ruling body of cricket showing respect to the verdict of the court. At a press briefing held at the National Press Club on Sunday the directors appealed to the government, National Sports Council and all others concerned to keep the flag of democracy flying high and to ensure the smooth running of the game. The directors declared that the current ad-hoc committee is unconstitutional as the court has ordered to reinstate the elected directors to run the board. Architect Mobasher Hossain, one of the directors, had called on the current board president, Ali Ashgar Lobi MP. ‘I on behalf of the directors asked the president to convene a meeting of the board and let us start our works. He said he was yet to receive the certified copy of the HC verdict and he will take necessary steps accordingly,’ said Mobasher. The directors hailed the verdict of the court as a moral victory and a victory of democracy. They expressed utter surprise as the case was filed against not only the cricket board but also against the sports ministry and the sports council but both the organisations did not even bother to take any legal step against the accusations. Only the directors combined themselves to fight against the unfair procedures. The directors said the court in its earlier ruling had directed the board not to take any major decisions till the disposal of the case but the ad-hoc committee has done a lot of works that were questionable. Regarding their stance on the issue of the Bangabandhu Stadium the directors said the BCB ad-hoc committee members cannot take this decision as they are illegal. The current board cannot take the decision as the matter was also not discussed at the annual general meeting. The directors demanded their chairs back as the elected body is supposed to continue in the board till May 21 this year and sounded a warning that they will put up a stiff resistance if any quarter tries to muddle the water. They appealed to keep cricket out of politics. The directors reminded the court’s verdict about holding the BCB elections within ninety days from the date of judgment and said they would follow the Acts of the constitution to call the meeting if the president takes an evasive role to give them back their chairs. They also informed the International Cricket Council was well aware of the happenings and they had apprised the ICC president about the situation. ‘We will also inform the ICC about the verdict after getting the copy of the verdict,’ said Mobasher. The directors claimed that the current president had the right to terminate or expel the elected directors but that did not happen but anyhow they were deprived of their rights. Being aware that the losers of the case will file an appeal with the higher court the directors said it would be done just to pass the time or harass them. They revealed their confidence of winning again in the higher court. Directors Enayet Hossain Siraj, Dewan .Arefin Tutul, Mahmudul Huq Manu, Enayet Kabir Chanchal, GS Hasan Tamim,. Tanjib Ahsan Saad, Mortuza Rashidi Dara were present at the press conference. Meanwhile, Rafiqul Islam Babu, the plaintiff in the case, has filed a leave petition with the Chamber Judge of the appellate division on Sunday noon and the hearing on the petition will take place today.
India in for a big shock, claims Inzy
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, Karachi
Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has fired the first salvo ahead of an away cricket series against India, saying his young team could spring a big surprise on the hosts. The Inzamam-led side was at the receiving end a year ago when India clinched both the Test and one-day series on their first full tour of Pakistan in nearly 15 years. ‘India will be under pressure at home,’ Inzamam told AFP ahead of the team’s departure for India on Monday for three Test matches and six one-day internationals. ‘We lost the home series last year, now it could be India’s turn to lose a home series,’ he said. The much-anticipated series, Pakistan’s first in India since 1999, is also a personal challenge for Inzamam who has often been criticized for being too soft and passive as captain. As the tourists were thrashed by formidable Australia in all three Tests earlier this season, Inzamam came under fire for missing two of the Tests due to injury. But if he regains his fitness, the Pakistani skipper is set to achieve a milestone in the third and final Test in Bangalore where he will make his 100th Test appearance. ‘We can beat India in India provided we remain mentally strong and play as a team, because team spirit will be a deciding factor,’ he said. Inzamam, who turns 35 on March 3, five days before the first Test starts in Mohali on March 8, also has a chance to prolong his international career with an impressive show in India. ‘It’s a huge challenge for the team as well as me,’ said Inzamam, reminded of Pakistan’s victories in two of the three Tests on the last tour of India in 1999. ‘I remember what those wins did for Wasim Akram, who was under pressure before that 1999 tour. The victories did a world of good to him. ‘Hopefully it will be the same for me too.’ But Inzamam knows his current team is not as strong as Akram’s side. ‘We then had a very mature team but the current players have learnt a lot in the past year, especially in Australia,’ said Inzamam, who took over as captain in 2003. ‘Despite being young, they are talented and if they keep a professional approach and stick to the basics they can achieve glory. Playing India is always a challenge, but it’s a challenge for India too.’ Regarded as one of the world’s leading batsmen with 7,052 Test and 10,631 one-day runs, Inzamam knows he needs to lead from the front. ‘I know I have a duty as a batsman also. I know how important it is to score big in India,’ said Inzamam, who managed just 93 in two Tests in 1999. He hoped his bowlers would make up for the absence of paceman Shoaib Akhtar, who pulled out of the series with a hamstring injury. ‘It would have been nice to have Akhtar, but since he is injured it’s the responsibility of back-up bowlers to deliver the goods,’ he said. ‘Cricket is a team game, so all 11 players have to contribute.’
Lee warned with lawsuit
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, Wellington
New Zealand cricket coach John Bracewell warned Sunday that Australian speedster Brett Lee risked being taken to court if he continued to fire down beamers. Bracewell was irked by Lee’s waist-high full toss to Brendon McCullum in the third one-day international in Auckland on Sunday. A furious McCullum confronted Lee mid-pitch after being struck on the arm, and while the incident was later resolved with an apology, Bracewell was not happy. ‘It is the fourth time this season that he’s beamed one of our guys. He’s been apologetic every time he’s done it,’ Bracewell said. ‘He was apologetic when he came round the wicket and did it to Chris Harris, and Paul Wiseman, and he’s apologised twice to Brendon. I’m not sure if he apologised to (Pakistan’s Abdur) Razzaq. That’s a lot of apologies.’ Bracewell claimed Lee might set a precedent for cricket if he seriously injured someone with a beamer on Australian soil. He cited the recent case involving rugby league star Jarrod McCracken, who successfully sued the Melbourne Storm club and players Steve Kearney and Marcus Bai for damages after his career was ended by a spear tackle. ‘I think it’s going to be more serious if it happens in Australia with the Jarrod McCracken call, if it does hit somebody,’ Bracewell said. ‘That’s Australia law, the precedent’s been set there which is pretty dangerous for your country not mine,’ Bracewell said, noting New Zealand has an accident compensation system in place to cover sports injuries. Lee, who took two for 24 off seven overs on Saturday and cracked Michael Papps on the head with a bouncer, forcing him to retire hurt, was contrite afterwards. He said the heavy dew caused his feet to shift on delivery stride and he lost control against McCullum. ‘Unfortunately the ball came out and it hit him, thank God it didn’t hurt him,’ Lee said. ‘I know when I was beamed accidently by Razzaq (during the recent tri-series) your first impression is to go crazy. ‘He (McCullum) lost it there for 15-20 seconds and I went up and apologised and said ‘I would never mean to do that’.’
Smith punishes Zimbabwe
REUTERS, Durban
Latest: South Africa (329/6) beat Zimbabwe (198/7) by 131 runs Graeme Smith scored his third century and Justin Kemp provided late fireworks as South Africa recovered from a tardy start to amass 329 for six against Zimbabwe in the second one-day international on Sunday. The South African captain, who top scored with 117 off 129 balls, was the steadying influence after the hosts slipped to 67 for three in the 15th over having been put into bat. Kemp pushed South Africa past 300 with a dazzling half-century off just 19 balls — tying a South African record set by Mark Boucher against Kenya in 2001. Smith and Herschelle Gibbs (75) shared a stand of 134 for the fourth wicket before the partnership was ended in the 37th over when Gibbs smashed a delivery from off-spinner Barney Rogers straight back at the bowler and was caught. Rogers struck again in the 45th over when Smith heaved one of his tame deliveries to Hamilton Masakadza at long-on. Smith’s dismissal ended a partnership of 55 with Ashwell Prince for the fifth wicket. Prince was out three overs later for 30 but Kemp thumped a blistering 53 not out off 21 balls with two fours and five sixes. Fast bowler Tinashe Panyangara left the field after bowling 3.4 overs with a suspected back injury. South Africa won the first match in the three-match series by 165 runs in Johannesburg on Friday.

Doha title Sharapova’s
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, Doha
Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova fought back in style to beat Alicia Molik and clinch the WTA Qatar Open crown here on Saturday. The Russian, seeded second in Doha, prevailed over the Australian fourth seed 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a pulsating final to claim the 94,000 dollar top prize. Sharapova also extended her domination over Molik to three wins from four encounters. However, it was the first time that Sharapova had beaten Molik in a final, the Australian having won the title when they met for the title in Zurich in 2004. Molik, who had shocked the top seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France in the semi-finals on Friday, appeared to have carried her form into the final when she broke the Siberia-born Sharapova in the third game of the first set and went on to win it. But Sharapova hit back with such ferocity that Molik’s game fell apart as the Russian raced to an unassailable 5-0 lead in the second set. Molik, whose power had proven decisive against Mauresmo, found herself at the receiving end of things as Sharapova broke her in the second game and never looked back. Sharapova, who had won the Pan Pacific Open in Japan earlier this month before missing the Paris Indoor Open, broke through in the fifth game of the third set and then held her serve to lead 4-2. Molik then retained her serve to close the gap at 3-4 but Sharapova held on to her serve and then finished off the match with an ace after saving a break point in the 10th game.
Majestic Federer downs Agassi
REUTERS, Dubai
Roger Federer claimed a stunning 6-3, 6-1 victory over a traumatised Andre Agassi on Saturday to reach the final of the Dubai Open. Having failed to show his best form throughout the week, including during his 6-3, 7-5 quarter-final victory over Mikhail Youzhny earlier in the day, the Swiss world number one was virtually unplayable in the second set, tying up the match in just 51 minutes. Hitting winners almost at will, he surpassed even his own high standards to break for a 3-0 lead in the second set, running back and then hitting a lob that landed right on the baseline to leave even Federer shaking his head in wonder. That second break of the set signalled the end for Agassi. In a highly entertaining match which emphasised placement rather than power, it was Agassi who made the steadier start, holding a break point at 1-1 that was saved by Federer with a service winner. Federer then reduced his errors and games went comfortably with serve until 4-3, when Federer broke Agassi to love and took the opening set by winning 12 of the last 13 points. Agassi found his back against the wall as Federer continued his momentum into the second set, dropping his serve when Federer hit a winning pass on his second break point after Agassi had saved the first with a second serve ace. After Federer had earned a further break to lead 3-0 Agassi moved into containment mode, but had no chance of turning the match around. Finally, he ended his frustrated challenge with a whimper, dropping the final game to love and finishing with a double-fault. Federer, the twice defending champion, will play eighth seed Ivan Ljubicic in the final, after the Croatian defeated fifth seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-4, 6-3. It was the 20th victory of the year for Ljubicic, who has now reached four finals this year, and a remarkable three finals in the last three weeks. The 25-year-old Croatian was previously beaten by Federer in both Doha and last week in Rotterdam after leading the final set tiebreak 4-2, with his other loss coming against Joachim Johansson in Marseille. A serve that produced 13 aces as well as some stylish groundstrokes gave Ljubicic the advantage against Robredo, who failed to take the few opportunities he had in the closely-contested 80 minute battle. Games went easily with serve until Ljubicic led 4-3, and after both players had failed to convert break points in the next two games a wild backhand from Robredo and then a winning return gave Ljubicic the only break of the set. The more consistent Ljubicic maintained his advantage in the second set, failing to win two break points for a 2-0 lead but then breaking to lead 5-3 when Robredo made a backhand error.

Not easy to spot winners in Indo-Pak series
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, Karachi
Never make the mistake of predicting a winner in an India-Pakistan contest, cricket experts have warned ahead of the high-profile series between the arch-rivals. Opinions are already divided, with some claiming India will complete a 3-0 whitewash on the strength of their spin on low, slow home pitches. Others disagree, saying a young Pakistani side have the wherewithal to surprise the hosts in the three-Test series and the six one-day internationals to follow. ‘Never predict winners in an India-Pakistan series,’ says former Pakistan captain Imran Khan, who led his team to victory in the 1992 World Cup in Australia and also vanquished India on their own soil in 1987. ‘I think the ability to cope with pressure will decide the issue in this series. We had a weak team in 1987, but still won in India because we handled pressure better than our rivals,’ said Imran. ‘Pakistan need to show team spirit and fighting qualities on the tour, especially after losing key paceman Shoaib Akhtar due to a hamstring injury. ‘On paper, Pakistan appear weaker than India but it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.’ Imran believes pace will be Pakistan’s best bet against a strong Indian batting line-up. But Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer says his team will have to bat better against Indian spinners Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in order to win the series. ‘It’s a huge challenge to face Kumble and Harbhajan, but our boys have done it before,’ said Woolmer. Leg-spinner Kumble troubled Pakistan the most on their last tour in 1999, becoming only the second bowler after Englishman Jim Laker to claim 10 wickets in a Test innings in the second match at Delhi. Kumble again exposed the Pakistani batsmen’s weakness against leg-spin last year, finishing with 15 wickets in three Tests to play a crucial role in his team’s maiden series victory across the border. ‘You need to play psychological games in an Pakistan-India match,’ said Woolmer. ‘The hosts always start favourites, so India appear to have the edge but mental games are key to success in these games,’ said the Pakistani coach. Former captain Wasim Akram said Pakistan’s batting performance against the spinners would be the key. ‘Kumble is a dangerous spinner and Pakistan need to play him cautiously,’ said Akram, who led his team to victories in two of the three Test matches in 1999. ‘Pakistan need to play with a plan and if they stick to a plan you can always win against India since our team is a balanced team,’ he said. Pakistan’s batting revolves around skipper Inzamam-ul Haq, Yousuf Youhana and Younis Khan. In Akhtar’s absence, the pace attack will be led by Mohammad Sami. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Mohammad Khalil and Abdul Razzaq are other fast bowlers in the squad. Sami will be under pressure to deliver as he has been regarded as an under-achiever with just 48 wickets in 18 Tests. ‘I hope Sami delivers. He needs to live up to his potential, but others also should contribute,’ said Inzamam. Danish Kaneria is the key spinner in the side and will be supported by Arshad Khan and Shahid Afridi.

Absolutely Rooney
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, London
Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Wayne Rooney as ‘absolutely magnificent’ after the teenager kept Manchester United’s bid to catch Chelsea at the top of the Premiership on track with a superb double strike against Portsmouth on Saturday. A 2-1 win cut Chelsea’s advantage back to six points. The London club, who play Liverpool in the League Cup final on Sunday, retain a game in hand. But by the time they play Norwich next Saturday, United could have reduced their lead to just three points if they beat Crystal Palace earlier in the day. Ferguson acknowledged his side had been short of their best after a draining Champions League defeat by AC Milan in midweek. But he was unstinting in his praise for Rooney. ‘He was by far our best player,’ the Scot said. ‘He was absolutely magnificent today. And he’s a winner, he was one taking the baton up and making the run for the line. The whole day he was on song.’ For most of the second half, after Gary O’Neill had cancelled out Rooney’s sweetly taken opener, it looked as if Portsmouth, the last side to beat United in the league back in October, would defy the odds once more. But Rooney had other ideas. With ten minutes left, the teenager collected a pass from Ruud van Nistelrooy in his stride and surged into the box before finishing with aplomb to make it six league wins in a row for Ferguson’s side. Ferguson revealed that Rio Ferdinand had missed the match with a hamstring injury while skipper Roy Keane was rested and Gary Neville came off injured at half-time. While United continue to hold out hope that Chelsea will crack, Arsenal’s lingering hopes of retaining their Premiership title appeared to have been crushed after a 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened Southampton that left them ten points behind Chelsea. Everton are looking good to claim the fourth qualifying spot for next season’s Champions League, with a 3-1 win at Aston Villa that left them eight points ahead of nearest rivals Liverpool. Despite taking a point from Arsenal, Southampton were left further adrift of safety as a result of Crystal Palace’s 2-0 defeat of Birmingham. Two penalties from Birmingham old boy Andy Johnson lifted Palace four points clear of the drop zone, a margin that could prove just enough with only ten games left to play. Southampton will nevertheless take heart from the way they responded against Arsenal after being reduced to ten men just before half-time, when David Prutton was sent off following ugly tackles on Mathieu Flamini and Robert Pires. The champions Arsenal exploited their advantage almost immediately when Freddie Ljungberg put them ahead in first half stoppage time. But the numbers were evened up six minutes after the interval, Robin van Persie receiving his marching orders after incurring a second yellow card with a bad challenge on Graeme Le Saux. Peter Crouch headed in a well-deserved equaliser for Southampton in the 67th minute and Wenger made it clear he held van Persie responsible. ‘I told him at half-time that when the home team has a player sent off, the referee is under pressure to send off an opposing player who has already been booked.’ Wenger’s mood was unlikely to be helped by the fact that Southampton’s equaliser again exposed the defensive deficiencies that have dogged Arsenal this season. Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann flapped hopelessly at a corner from his right and giant striker Crouch was left with a free header which he directed downwards and into the net off the underside of the bar. Leon Osman scored twice for Everton while Australian Tim Cahill was also on the mark with Nolberto Solana replying for Villa, whose faint hopes of securing European football are receding fast. In Saturday’s other match, Spurs left it late but finally overcame London rivals Fulham at White Hart Lane with goals from Fredi Kanoute (78) and Robbie Keane (90).
Barcelona held while Real digging own grave
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, Madrid
Little Numancia, firmly rooted to the foot of the Spanish first division, stunned mighty Barcelona on Saturday by holding the leaders and Champions League contenders to a 1-1 draw. However, the result meant that Barcelona were still able to increase their lead over bitter rivals Real Madrid to eight points after Real slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Deportivo La Coruna. On an icy pitch, which had been cleared of 80 lorry loads of snow in the run-up to the match, Barca struggled to impose their slinky passing game and were behind just before half-time. Juanlu scored with an acrobatic effort past goalkeeper Victor Valdes. However, Barca were back on level terms just after the restart when Xavi’s corner was met by Mexican defender Rafael Marquez who got ahead of two defenders to score. Playing without Michel Salgado, Ivan Helguera, flu-stricken Raul and Ronaldo, with an injured foot, Real Madrid were trailing after just eight minutes at Deportivo. A cross from the right by Sergio fell for Luque who beat goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Five minutes later, it was 2-0 to Deportivo when Francisco Pavon put through his own goal. Deportivo could have added to their total but Real were indebted to Casillas who kept the score down with a string of fine saves. To add to their problems, Real also saw Zinedine Zidane limp off after 28 minutes with a right knee injury. Barcelona-based Espanyol continued to press their claims to compete in Europe next season when they beat struggling Albacete 2-1. Levante came from behind to halt their recent slide and get a useful 2-1 away win at Real Mallorca. The loss leaves Mallorca deep in relegation trouble, second from bottom.
Green light for microchip ball
]
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, Cardfiff
A microchip-equipped ball designed to end disputes over goal-line decisions could be used at next year’s World Cup after world football’s rule-making body issued a green light for a trial of the new technology here on Saturday. At talks here, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) agreed to trial a ‘smartball’ developed by sports equipment giant Adidas which contains a microchip that bleeps when it crosses lines fitted with special sensors. The technology was presented to the Board on Saturday and is to be used for both goal and side lines on an experimental basis at FIFA under-17 World Cup in Peru in September. FIFA President Sepp Blatter insisted this was not the first step on the road to introducing video replays being viewed by a fourth official. ‘The international board have tried to keep football with a human face and the possible errors and the only technology where the board has said yes is for goal-line technology. ‘Now for the World Cup 2006 such a system could and should be applied when and if the results of our test are conclusive.’ Adidas spokesman Thomas van Schaik said they were determined to make sure the ‘smartball’ was 100 percent reliable. ‘We are convinced in the quality of the system but we have to prove the 100 percent accuracy of this system so that the entire football family is convinced. If not, we should not rush things.’ It is hoped the new technology will finally end disputes such as the one over whether England’s third goal in the 1966 World Cup final actually crossed the line. ‘That Geoff Hurst goal is the point of the technology because you can look at it 100 times and never be sure,’ added van Schaik. The microchip ball is attractive to rule makers because it would provide instant decisions, unlike the use of video replays which would result in the flow of the game being interrupted. The IFAB is made up of representatives from each of the four British national associations and world governing body FIFA. Each of the associations have one vote each with FIFA holding four and six of the eight votes required to sanction any change to the rules.
Mourinho confirms Rijkaard entered referee’s room
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, London
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed for the first time that he witnessed Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard enter referee Anders Frisk’s dressing room during half-time in their fiery Champions League match in midweek. The Portuguese manager has faced criticism all week after his initial claims about Rijkaard’s alleged talk with Frisk were downplayed by the Dutch coach and Barcelona, who branded him pathetic and a liar. However hours before Chelsea prepare to take on Liverpool in the English League Cup final Mourinho has revived the debate, and has effectively linked Rijkaard’s talk with Frisk to the sending off of Chelsea striker Didier Drogba. Speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record Dez, Mourinho said: ‘When I saw Rijkaard entering the referee’s dressing room I couldn’t believe it. And when Drogba was sent off I wasn’t surprised.’ Mourinho is now hoping that UEFA will to appoint respected Italian referee Pierluigi Collina for the second leg tie at Stamford Bridge. ‘When the game ended I took a breath because it wasn’t a bad result. But something tells me in London the referee will be Collina, the best in the world, a perfect referee with personality and quality,’ he added. Chelsea have already complained to UEFA about Rijkaard’s discussion with Frisk during the interval, but Mourinho is in hot water with the game’s ruling body in Europe because he refused to attend a post match press conference. But if proved to be true, Rijkaard’s alleged conversation with Frisk could partly admonish Mourinho when and if UEFA decide to sanction Chelsea for their no-show. In midweek, UEFA spokesman William Gaillard told the BBC, ‘We do not understand the Chelsea decision. ‘We will certainly ask them. It is a violation of the rules.’
Kenyon denies Robben’s Barcelona return
BBC ONLINE
Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has played down reports that Arjen Robben will return for the Champions League match against Barcelona. ‘He’s been responding well to treatment and started running on Friday, but we’ll have to wait and see,’ he told BBC Five Live’s Sportsweek. ‘We’re looking to getting him back as soon as possible, but he’ll be back when it’s right for him and for us. ‘There’s no plans at the moment around the Barcelona game.’ His comments contradict those of chiropractor Jean Pierre Meersseman who treated the Dutchman after he fractured his foot at the start of February. Robben had been expected to be out for six weeks, but Meersseman hinted that the winger could be fit for the vital Stamford Bridge game on 8 March. ‘I hope he can be back and I will try to help him make that happen,’ Meersseman told the Mail on Sunday. ‘I put everything right with Arjen’s foot the last time I saw him 12 days ago. It was an obvious correction and easy to perform. ‘I know he was pleased with what I did and now that he is running again. ‘I am due to see him one more time again in the next few days.’ Meersseman is the medical co-ordinator at Italian side AC Milan.
Real resigned to losing Gerrard to Chelsea
NEW AGE DESK
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger hit out on Friday at the ‘superiority complex’ of English football and claimed that no teams Real Madrid fear they will be beaten by Chelsea for Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard at the end of this season. The England ace has been made a priority summer target by Real coach Wanderley Luxemburgo and president Florentino Perez was hopeful that his good relationship with the midfielder’s agents would clinch his signature. But the Daily Star Sunday says Real chiefs have received word that Chelsea are in a strong position to land Gerrard should the Anfield hero decide to leave Liverpool in the summer. ‘I never wrote off Liverpool’s Euro chances’ Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard insists he never wrote off his team’s Champions League chances this week. Gerrard was criticised by manager Rafa Benitez after quotes attributed to him appeared in the press playing down Liverpool’s chances this season. ‘No-one is more optimistic than me before any game we play,’ Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo. ‘You never hear me saying we can’t win or won’t win, all I said was the odds were against us. The bookies had us 33-1 before the first leg and everyone knows we’re outsiders. ‘But I was absolutely gutted when I heard it being suggested I was writing us off. I’d never do that. I’ve done enough interviews where everyone can hear how positive I am about the new manager and the future, and I definitely believe if we play to our potential we can win the Champions League. ‘I was positive in a lot of things I said, but because I said in one part of the interview we know it might not be our year this time, that was the part of the interview emphasised on the day of the game. I think that was unfair.’
Sampdoria up to third
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, Rome
Sampdoria boosted their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League with a 1-0 Serie A victory at relegation-threatened Brescia on Saturday. Max Tonetto scored the only goal with a fierce volley 14 minutes from time to lift Sampdoria up to third on 44 points, one ahead of fourth-placed Inter Milan, who play on Sunday against local rivals AC Milan. Udinese remain fifth after drawing 2-2 at struggling Fiorentina in Saturday’s late match. In Florence, Bulgarian striker Valeri Bojinov put Fiorentina ahead in the 22nd minute with a crisp finish before being stretchered off with a thigh injury. Luca Arriati doubled the home side’s lead with a glancing header 12 minutes later, only for Sulley Ali Muntari to pull one back just before the break. Udinese levelled the score in the 56th minute when Di Natale volleyed home after good work from David Di Michele and Marek Jankulovski.

Real Madrid ace Ronaldo is being linked with a sensational move to Chelsea. The News of the World says Ronaldo wants a move to Chelsea after falling out with coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo. The Brazil international is known to be fed up over his treatment from management since Luxemburgo's arrival, having received a fine last week for arriving late to training following wedding celebrations. Ronaldo came out in the press yesterday insisting he was not seeking special treatment from Real. However, he was not in the squad for Saturday's defeat at Deportivo La Coruna. You can’t trust Ronaldo, says former wife A little over a week from the farce known as Ronaldo’s wedding, his former wife Milene Domingues revealed some negative traits of the Real Madrid star. ‘It’s better not to trust him too much,’ she told Brazlian paper O Dia, ‘because he likes the glamour and the parties. Daniela (his new wife) is very jealous and possessive, for this reason I didn’t show up at his new wedding that I was invited to,’ she said. Milene added that Daniela is also the reason why Ronaldo doesn’t see their son Ronald that much any longer. ‘From the moment Ronaldo got together with her, you can count on your fingers the time Ronald spent time with his father,’ she added. Ronaldo and Milene are currently settling their divorce.

Technical amendment
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) update the Laws of the Game to include the rules governing the movement of coaching staff within the so-called 'technical area'. The IFAB stipulate that designated individuals are free to convey tactical instructions to the players during the course of a game, so long as they stay within the confines of the technical area (normally directly in front of the bench) and behave in a responsible manner. It falls within the remit of the fourth official to supervise the technical area in a manner that is both 'preventative and non-confrontational' and report any serious misconduct to the referee.
