Bangla Academy violates own spelling standards
The Bangla Academy has been violating the spelling standards it had worked out in 1992. An investigation showed that the violation began after Prof Monsur Musa had assumed office of the director general of the academy in 2001. ‘The latest evidence of violation is the gate of the ongoing Amar Ekushey book fair, where the words were not spelt in accordance with the standards,’ said a researcher. The Bangla Academy took initiative to work out the spelling standards in 1991. ‘A five-member national committee, headed by Professor Anisuzzaman, prepared the guideline for the spelling of Bangla words,’ said Professor Mohammad Harun-ur-Rashid, then director general of the academy. Bashir Al Helal, a researcher on literature and linguistics, was member-secretary on the committee....[ + ]
